One thing is certain – milk and dairy produce play an important role in feeding the little ones. But let’s be clear on some important aspects related to how much milk should a baby drink.

  • In the first weeks of life the baby can eat even 15-16 times within 24 hours. Later, meals become little (8-12 times) with an effective duration of 10-20 minutes at each breast. By the age of 6 months, your baby is satisfied only with breast milk.
  • You can give the child cow’s milk, but only after the age of one year. There are preferred the variants with full-fat content until three years old. Fats are important for brain development. However, cow’s milk is not 100% good – it has a high content of salts and proteins, which can overtax the kidneys and liver of the child. For this reason, the milk growth appeared recommended for children aged one and three. It is enriched with vitamins, calcium, iron, iodine and has, of course, less salt and protein.
  • Although milk is the basic food, your baby must not receive too much. Up to three years is recommended to drink a quantity of 250 ml and 500 ml per day, distributed to the morning and evening meal. If he refuses milk, you should not force him to drink it. Try to give it in other forms, with cereals, rice, semolina or puddings or replace it with other dairy produce: yogurt, cheese, and so on.
  • At birth the skeleton of a newborn has just 30 mg of calcium, but up to 18 years old, he must accumulate one kilogram (2 pounds). Kids between one and three years need 500 mg of calcium per day, and those between four and eight years, 800 mg. Therefore, American pediatricians recommend two servings of milk per day for children under four years and three for those between four and eight years. A serving is either a glass of milk or yogurt or 50 g of cheese. Up to two years old, kids should receive half the amount of calories in the form of fat, and milk is an important source of calories rich in fat.
